Dress Code:

IMPORTANT - Target and Kmart sell a bedroom slipper that looks a little like a ballet slipper – but it is NOT appropriate for class. Wearing this kind of slipper in dance class will increase the risk of injury.

BRAVO BAMBINOS, & ALL BALLET CLASSES UP THROUGH AGE 8 – Pink leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers.  No skirts, please.  (Young students have shown themselves to do much better in the disciplined world of ballet when they are dressed the same, and not distracted by comparing themselves and their clothes to the rest of the class.)  Hair must be off the neck and out of their face. Please – no underwear under the tights and leotards.  (See important note above regarding ballet shoes.)

BALLET CLASSES AGE 9 AND OLDER – Solid colored leotard, solid colored tights, pink ballet slippers.   Dance skirts are allowed.  Hair must be off the neck.

MALE DANCE STUDENTS – Black stretch pants and white shirt for ballet.   All other classes – stretchy/loose pants and t-shirt, with appropriate shoes (black) for each class.

TAP CLASSES – Loose comfortable clothing, and flat black tap shoes in good repair.

JAZZ CLASSES – A leotard of any color, jazz pants (preferably black), and black jazz shoes or boots.

HIP HOP, HIP HOP/JAZZ COMBO, and MUSICAL THEATER CLASSES - A leotard is preferred, but not required.  If no leotard is worn, the shirt/top must be long enough to cover the midriff during all dance movements and stretching.   Pants must be made of stretchy/knit fabric that allows for complete freedom of movement.  Pants that ride below the hip bones will not be allowed.  Jeans are only allowed if they are made of stretch denim.  Ballet shoes are okay, but black Jazz or Hip Hop shoes (or boots) are preferred.*

CURTAIN CALL KIDS - Clothing requirements are the same as for Hip Hop and Musical Theater.  Two kinds of shoes are required.  First, either jazz shoes* or ballet shoes…  second, tap shoes. The studio has some loaners for children.

ACTING, SINGING, & ART CLASSES – Everyday clothing (that does not expose the midriff) is acceptable.  Street shoes must be removed.   Sox or clean bare feet are fine.

MALE DANCE STUDENTS – Black stretch pants and white shirt for ballet.   All other classes – stretchy/loose pants and t-shirt, with appropriate shoes (black) for each class.

BALLROOM/COUPLES CLASSES - Loose comfortable clothing, and CLEAN hard-soled shoes.  No sharp heels, please.

* If you do not have jazz or hip hop shoes, please do not buy or wear new tennis shoes! Today’s tennis shoes have thick soles which greatly increase the risk of injury. Also, they have very little flexibility, which is a real drawback when dancing. AND… they are made to grip the floor, which also increases the risk of injury. You need to be able to swivel, turn, and slide. So if you don’t want to spend money on real dance shoes yet, go to a thrift store and buy a worn out pair of tennis shoes with the thinnest soles you can find, and all the tread worn off the bottoms. Make sure they fit securely. Then wash them well, and they will work fine until you can purchase jazz or hip hop shoes.

IMPORTANT!

  • If you take ski lessons, you must wear ski clothes, skis, and ski boots. If you join a soccer team, you must wear soccer shoes, shin pads, and a soccer uniform. If you want take swimming lessons, you must wear your swimsuit and bring a towel. IF YOU ARE TAKING DANCE LESSONS, YOU MUST WEAR ACTUAL DANCE CLOTHES AND DANCE SHOES. (The studio has many pairs of loaners for students to use during class until they are able to purchase their own shoes.)
  • Dance shoes will not work for class if they do not fit well. Sloppy shoes are a hazard.
  • We encourage all our female dance students to wear dance leotards in every dance class. One important reason is that they keep your midriff covered. Bare midriffs are a distraction to other students, the instructor, and any possible visitors and/or family members. This is especially true during stretching and the more athletic choreography expected in intermediate and advanced classes. Necklines on leotards and tops should also be modest. We respect your right to wear what you please outside of the studio, but also ask that you please respect our guidelines inside of the studio. Any students whose clothing is too revealing will be given a large t-shirt to wear during class.
  • Jeans do not generally work for dance class. They do not allow for complete freedom of movement. Pants worn for dancing should be made of a stretchy/knit fabric.
  • T-shirts should not have any language or images that are obscene or vulgar, or related to drugs or alcohol.

Dance clothes and shoes can be purchased at any of the following places…
